The Salento Region

The Salento, „the heel of the italian ‘boot’” is a cultural highlight of its own kind: from the remains of the Messapian culture and the roman empire to the middle ages, renaissance and modern days the witnesses of time & history like buildings, exceptional art-treasures and culture are all around. Ruins of old amphitheaters facing the glory of baroque Palazzi while the stone guardtowers from the 12th century still perform their watch on the coastline. While built to protect from the Saracen- and Pirate-attacks they nowadays create the picturesque view that’s typical for the region of Porto Cesareo: Torre Cesareo, Torre Lapillo, Torre Chianca are still “guarding” the beautiful natural harbor of the town and the Pizzica & Tarantella-tunes are playing on the countless festivals throughout the country and while the people dance the delicacies of the cucina Salentina are served alongside the marvelous wines of the local winerys (e.g. the Primitivo di Manduria).

The town of Lecce is the capital of the same names province and an enchanting city of its own: “Southern Florence”, “Home of Baroque” are just a few of the names it has earned with its beautiful architecture made of its iconic white stone (pietra leccese). Amongst its treasures are a roman theater, an amphitheater, the Basilica Santa Croce, Porta Napoli and many excellent restaurants – Lecce is a must-see and just 25 kilometers away from Porto Cesareo.

Porto Cesareo, founded under the name Portus Sasinae in roman antiquity and its neighbouring communities are called “Maldives of Italy” and the reason for that is clear: 17 (!) kilometers of snowwhite beaches, dunes, turquoise waves with countless little islands and bays! A holiday destination that is still an insider-tip in foreign countries because in Porto Cesareo you can still enjoy the naturalness of the region instead of mass-turism elsewhere. Enjoy the real & authentic Southern Italy at the Tarentian Gulf!
